Today I was at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to attend the JKUAT/MIT AITI-x Day which marked the official close of the JKUAT/MIT AITI-x Java Mobile Application Development Course. It is the first course under the JKUAT Endeavor Programme, as well as an extension of the MIT AITI Mobile Application Development Course. Its main objective is to teach students how to develop real-world mobile applications targeted to the African market.
The course started on 15th September, 2009 and was conducted at the JKUAT Main campus in Juja. It was completed by 30 students who had been selected from the various IT courses offered at the University. As part of the course, the students developed impressive mobile applications in different groups.
The best part about the presentations today was that they we’re more than conceptual architectures and technology demonstrations – the students we’re able to fully demonstrate the range of functionality in their mobile applications as well as the underlying businesses cases that would make them viable in the marketplace. I was also invited as a guest to make a presentation on entrepreneurship based on my 7+ odd years at the helm of Dotsavvy. You can download this presentation here>
I am looking forward to the android handsets coming out next year. I think there will be some stiff competition in the mobile industry. The developing market in Africa has still yet to be tapped and I am hoping there will be a flood of awesome applications that will be useful and productive for emerging economies. RIM CEO made a comment last week about targeting the “untapped” market in developing nations. Bring on the competition, it will be healthy for the end user.
