27,000 High-Tech Water Filters donated in Eastern Kenya.

Coca-Cola®, Vestergaard Frandsen and Water For All Work Together to Provide First Major Shipment of LifeStraw® Water Filters to Matungula District

Safe and clean drinking water became a lot easier to access today at the Kimanza Secondary School and Kwasyokimanza Primary Schools in Matungula District thanks to an initial donation by Danish consumers of 27,000 high-tech LifeStraw® water purifiers through a partnership including Coca-Cola®, Vestergaard Frandsen and Water For All. Today’s donation by Danish consumers represents the bulk of some 35,000 LifeStraw® water purifiers that will arrive throughout Kenya this year.

According to a 2006 report from the United Nation’s Development Program, waterborne diseases were estimated to cause 1.8 million deaths each year while about 1.1 billion people lacked proper drinking water. The problem is especially severe in Africa. In Kenya alone, 40% of the population lacks access to clean and safe drinking water, resulting in millions of cases of diarrheal disease each year, serious illnesses, preventable deaths, lost productivity and absenteeism from school.

The project started in April 2010 under the banner of ‘3 litres of clean water’ as a partnership of the three companies with the aim of donating three litres of clean and safe water to Africa for every purchase of Kildevæld® – Coca-Cola’s leading bottled water brand in the Nordic region. Since the campaign began, Danish consumers have committed to donating more than 51 million litres of water to communities in Africa.

“This campaign has clearly shown that even small changes in everyday routine can create large results. Thanks to the fantastic support from Danish consumers, millions of litres of clean water have been pledged – those are now helping children and families in Kenya. This underlines the essence of the campaign – you can make a difference,” said Søren Kristensen, Country Manager, Coca-Cola Nordic.

The first project to receive funding is the Kimanza Secondary School and Kwasyokimanza Primary Schools in Matungula District. Kenya was chosen by Water For All because of the organization’s deep roots in the country.

“In July, the United Nations affirmed that access to clean and safe drinking water is a basic human right. I’m proud and honored to be part of this project that will help provide this right to so many local children to keep them healthy, remain in school, and allow families and the Matungula District to enjoy better heath and a brighter future,” said Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, CEO of the Group, Vestergaard Frandsen which created the LifeStraw® product.

Segun Ogunsanya, Managing Director, Nairobi Bottlers Limited – Coca-Cola’s anchor bottler in East Africa, says water is the element most necessary for survival and without it; communities cannot be healthy which would then make Coca-Cola business unsustainable.  He said through Coca-Cola System’s flagship water strategy program, Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN), the company is able to reduce its water use ratio, recycle water used in the manufacturing process, and replenish water in communities through the support of broad based projects.

“Water For All is committed to using innovative and appropriate technologies to facilitate access to clean water in Africa,” said Jill Rademacher, President of the NGO that is distributing LifeStraw® units on behalf of Coca-Cola®. “We have donated LifeStraw® units here and in other countries and have seen firsthand how suitable and effective the technology is.” Water For All instructs recipients on the use of LifeStraw® units to ensure they are used for maximum benefit.

Reduction of waterborne diseases is a major public health goal in developing countries, and the Millennium Development Goal number seven calls for halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015. Point-of-use water purifiers like LifeStraw® are one way to help achieve these ambitious goals.

LifeStraw® comes in two models: a personal portable version which filters out more than 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of parasites; and LifeStraw® Family, an advanced home purifier which removes a whopping 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99 % of viruses, and 99.9% of parasites. Together, these two point-of-use water solutions allow the user to drink safely and easily—anytime, anywhere.

Accessing clean and safe drinking water in the developing world can be challenging, but LifeStraw® was designed to withstand demanding physical environments.  It requires no electricity or spare parts and is appropriate for quick distribution after natural disasters and complex emergencies including the 2010 Haitian earthquake, and the recent severe flooding in Pakistan where hundreds of thousands of LifeStraw® units are now in use.

Leading East African Companies To Contest CIO 100 Award.

CIO East Africa has announced that more than 350 applications have been received to be named among the CIO 100. The competition will include many of East Africa’s most successful organizations, including Equity Bank, Kenya Airways, DHL, Kenya Power And Lighting Company, Kenya’s Ministry of Lands, Bidco Oil Refineries, Management Insurance Uganda, Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Uganda Finance Trust, Tanzania Telecommunication Company Ltd, Zanzibar Telecommunications Company Limited, Stanbic Bank Tanzania, Tanzania Bureau of Standards, Tanzania Electricity Supply Company, KOBIL Tanzania and Muhimbili National Hospital, just to mention a few. The CIO 100 Awards honors 100 companies that demonstrate excellence and achievement in IT.

The process of choosing the CIO 100 honorees is systematic and very competitive. “We’re looking for companies that are using IT in innovative ways to deliver competitive advantage to the enterprise and enable growth.” says Mr. Harry Hare, Director at CIO East Africa. To be considered for a CIO 100 Award, entrants apply using an application that asks them to identify several different aspects of their achievement. About the top 500 companies were approached through an extensive survey carried out by Synovate in the East African region. CIO East Africa also collects recommendations from its in-house experts, who nominate organizations which are distinguished for their innovative use of IT. Those organizations are also asked to apply.

A team of judges drawn from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will review the applications and make initial recommendations about each entrant. Continues Mr. Hare, “We debate how each company stacks up against the others in terms
of the depth and breadth of their practices, their creativity, the specific measurable results of their achievements, and the take-aways they can provide to our readers.”

Each application will be read by two members of the CIO 100 judging panel, who will rate it on a scale of 1 to 5 for each criterion, from a possible total of 50 points. Final selections will be confirmed by CIO East Africa magazine editors. All scores will be kept confidential. They will not be released publicly, nor will they be discussed with any individual applicants.

Nokia’s N8 Smartphone, in person.

This is a short video clip I took last week on Friday the 8th October 2010 at the Nokia OVI Happy Hour where Larry Madowo of KTN was having a go at an Nokia N8. The smartphone will be officially launched in Kenya on the 20th October 2010 and will be available in shops from early November 2010.

Kenyan apps on Ovi store have grown from two in April 2010 to thirty in October 2010

Nairobi 8th October 2010: Kenyan developers have taken their place in Nokia’s OVI store by creating a broad range of mobile apps with some already in high demand and generating revenue. Kenyan mobile apps in the OVI store have grown from just two in April 2010 to over thirty in October 2010.

“There has been a sharp rise in downloads from Ovi Store across Africa and Kenyan developers have greatly contributed to this trend thanks to growing number of  local developers creating locally relevant mobile applications” said Dorothy Ooko, Communications Manager, Nokia East & Southern Africa.

Kenyan mobile app developers are targeting different industries of the economy including entertainment, hospitality, banking, telecommunication amongst others. Most notable ones are Collepoa, Afro Hot or Not, Kenya Buzz Whats On, Eat Out Kenya, Sleepless Kenya, Movie Listings, Kenyan Jobs, African Sunrise, WannaBe Geek, Afrinnovator and Motogari. All the apps can be downloaded on store.ovi.com.

Nokia handset users downloaded around one million applications in East and Southern Africa which is a great leap for the region. Notably, Kenya accounted for 60% of these downloads since 1st July 2010 indicating steady growth in the number people downloading content from the OVI Store.

“The future is very bright and this is a huge opportunity for corporates to engage with consumers more by utilizing this free platform,” said Kenneth Oyolla, GM for East and Southern Africa, Nokia. He further added, that “We will support the efforts of developers in Kenya and across Africa through networking and training to increase participation and innovativeness.”

Kenya ICT Board Announces Private Sector Digital Content (Tandaa) Grant Winners.

I was meant to attend the Kenya ICT Board’s Dinner last week on the 30th September 2010 where they we’re to unveil the private sector digital content grant winners but I was really tired so could not make it. However, and this is something I had planned to blog about but I finally got my hands on the list of winners through the Kenya ICT Board web site this evening.

I must admit that the list included a good number of companies and organizations that are known to me including a client who asked for out help to bid for the same recently. I am actually kicking myself now for NOT making an application for a grant since from what I can tell its really good ideas that won the awards in general for both rounds (and I tend to have lots of them, or at least I think I do!).

In particular, Ask A Doc who are a Dotsavvy client (and will be partnering with them on this project) won an award for their grant application to offer a mobile-based medical information solutions (Congratulations Mwirigi Kinagwi and team!). Other winners included the likes of KenyaBuzz who are well known for their web site and e-newsletters that feature entertainment news that is regularly updated – they plan to “mobilize” their offerings and therefore reach a wider consumer market for their content.

CIO East Africa to host Inaugural CIO 100 Premier Awards in Nairobi, Kenya.

CIO East Africa, one of the leading magazines for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry in East
Africa, will host the East Africa CIO 100 Premier Annual Awards Competition at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya from 16th – 19th November 2010.  The event will draw participants from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The first annual East Africa CIO 100 Awards will celebrate 100 organizations (and the people within them) that are using information technology in innovative ways to deliver business value, whether by creating competitive advantage, optimizing business processes, enabling growth or improving relationships with customers.

“The CIO 100 Award is an acknowledged mark of enterprise excellence. For more than 24 years, the CIO 100 Awards has honored 100 companies each year that demonstrate excellence and achievement in IT across the globe” said
Harry Hare, the Editorial Director of CIO East Africa. The inaugural East Africa CIO 100 Awards is the first time that companies from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will be distinguished for their innovative use of IT.

CIO 100 recognizes organizations that have taken risks on emerging technology or deployed the tried-and-true in a new way. Maybe an organization has built a better business process or fostered closer collaboration. Or an organization found ways to get more from existing customers, to pursue new markets, to save money or to make more. CIO 100 is an opportunity for businesses to share with their peers about the technology innovations that have enabled or led the way to greater success for their organization.

Mr Hare said, to be selected, applicants must show not only that they have executed their project well, but that they have done so in uncommon, innovative ways such as pioneering a new technology, applying a familiar technology to a new purpose, setting the bar higher for competitors, and they must demonstrate business value, not just IT benefits.

CIO East Africa has partnered with Synnovate who will take the interested participants through the survey process. Synnovate is a global leader in research with extensive experience and an impressive client base in the
region. “This is the first initiative of its kind within this sector and we are very excited to partner with regional professional organisations such as Synovate and Delloite to make sure that the quality of the outcome is comparable to the US edition of CIO 100″ Mr. Hare continued.

To be eligible, companies will need to have an annual turn over of at least US$650,000 (approximately Kshs. 50 million), be tax compliant, and in operation for at least 3 years. The organization can be drawn from the private sector, public sector or any non governmental organizations. The closing date for all applications is Friday the 1st October 2010.

2010 a year of rapid growth for Nokia developers in Africa

Nairobi 4th October 2010: Ovi Store submissions nearly double; operator billing leads to significant growth in paid downloads; African developers shine in Calling All Innovators and Growth Economy Venture Challenge

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today reported a sharp rise in downloads from Ovi Store across Africa thanks to the growing number of African developers creating apps, as well as the introduction of operator billing in several markets across the continent.

Data show an increase in Ovi Store usage by consumers and developers across Africa. Since July 1, key findings include:

  • Ovi Store downloads by consumers in Africa have grown by 50 percent
  • Developer registrations with Forum Nokia are up more than 60 percent
  • Ovi Store active users have grown by more than 20 percent
  • In South Africa, purchases from Ovi Store have grown 438 percent since operator billing was rolled out in June
  • Mobile payment, instant messaging and health-related apps have been especially popular with people across Africa

Purnima Kochikar, head of Nokia’s developer activities around the world, said: “There are more apps in the Ovi Store every day and more people downloading them. Simply put, that means more money for developers. And it is not just about the quantity of apps, but the quality we are seeing from African developers that is incredibly encouraging.”

This new data follows a strong showing by companies from Africa in Calling All Innovators, a global developer contest Nokia holds annually. AppCRAFT (South Africa), IRWAA and LLC (Egypt) climbed to the top spots in the life improvement category of this year’s contest. Also, Virtual City (Kenya) received USD 1 million in funding as the winner of the Growth Economy Venture Challenge. Virtual City’s mobile distributor solution, which supports small and micro enterprises in emerging markets, was chosen by a panel of judges as the app most likely to improve the lives of people in the developing world.

African developers are taking different approaches in showcasing their innovation. South African developers are bringing their apps to the market in multiple languages, while in Northern Africa developers are especially targeting Arabic-speaking markets worldwide. At the same time, East Africa is becoming a center of entrepreneurial growth, with consumers pioneering the use of mobile payment systems like M-PESA, Zap, Yu-Cash powered by Obopay, MTN Money and Orange Money, which together have an estimated 12million subscribers.

To support the efforts of developers across Africa, Nokia plans to host boot camps covering Java, Web Runtime and Qt across the region. Reflections with Safaricom’s CEO, Michael Joseph.

The *iHub_ Nairobi and the Elimisha_us initiative are pleased to announce that Michael Joseph, the CEO of Safaricom Ltd, who is due to retire on November 1, 2010 will come to the *iHub_ Nairobi to meet with young techies, entrepreneurs and tech creatives and reflect on various issues including his last decade at the helm of the most successful company in East Africa.

In a candid discussion (just ten days before his retirement), Mr. Joseph is expected to share the wisdom gathered in his many years as a technology leader and his decade at Safaricom with young future technology leaders who are on the rise today. Among the issues that he may cover in his honest reflections are – his experience setting up and running Safaricom, the values that have driven him, his views on Kenya’s ICT development and its future direction and innovation.

In addition, as October 20th 2010 is Heroes day, the young developers, bloggers, tech creatives and entrepreneurs, will toast to the success of this leader, who through his visionary leadership at Safaricom has made significant contributions to the development of the opportunities they have today.

FORMAT:

The event will be an Invite-Only moderated “town hall” discussion for which participants will apply for invitation.  Michael speak for some minutes and then allow for questions in a moderated fashion.  In order to organise a high quality event, only 60 young bloggers, developers, tech creatives and entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to be in the room. LG’s Optimus Android smartphone (finally?) in Kenya.

A few months ago, I excitedly wrote a blog post here about the announcement from LG’s Kenya office that the Optimus Android smartphone (also known as the GT540) would be launched in Kenya sometime in June 2010. As events would have it, this never happened in June 2010 and instead its taken a few more months to finally make it here.

At the time, no Android smartphones had been launched in Kenya so it was something of a landmark moment when the announcement was made. However, since then, both Huawei and Sony Ericsson have launched a total of five Android handsets that are now retailing exclusively in Kenya via Safaricom’s Shops.

Therefore, it came as something of a shock this week when I was reading one of the newspapers and saw an ad for LG that showed that they had indeed launched the Optimus in Kenya (possibly as early as this week?) This took me by surprise as I had expected that LG would have made a big deal when they finally launched an Android handset and probably would have done so in conjunction with a mobile network such as Huawei and Sony Ericsson had done? No such thing (yet) apparently.

The LG Optimus was only introduced into the global marketplace sometime around May 2010 so its actually a pretty new Android smartphone by any standard. The irony however is that the LG ad in the newspaper was a general one with other handsets featured alongside the Optimus with some basic specifications for each one – quite disappointing if you ask me for what should a major event for them in Kenya.

However, what caught my eye is that the Optimus has a retail price of Kes. 25,499.00 which in my opinion is a fair price for what is a top of the line Android smartphone. What remains to be seen is how well the Optimus performs in the marketplace considering that there has been hardly any kind of marketing for it – this will certainly hurt sales unless LG Kenya is planning to do something big soon. Whatever the case, its really great that more and more Android smartphones are finding their way to Kenya and things can only get better from here.
