Happy 90th Birthday Madiba!

Nelson Mandela

Happy 90th Birthday Nelson Mandela! In truly sharp contrast to my earlier posting today on Mr. Mugabe, Nelson Mandela represents all that is good and true in humanity, as well as Africa.

This weekend, Madiba, as he’s popularly known, celebrated his 90th Birthday in London’s Hyde Park. The event was attended by over 50,000 participants and the likes of Kenya’s own Suzanne Owiyo performed.

The event was organized to support Mandela’s HIV/AIDS charity 46664, named for the number assigned him as a onetime political prisoner. During his visit to London for the concert, Mr. Mandela uttered just four words of criticism on Zimbabew and Mugabe in a speech at a dinner, “tragic failure of leadership” – they were enough to make headline news. Mr. Mugabe, are you listening? yet? Maybe there is something you can finally learn from a respected African Leader that the world adores and takes seriously. Madiba is a living legend and true hero of Africa.

Below are excerpts from his speech at the concert:

“Twenty years ago, London hosted a historic concert which called for our freedom,”

“Your voices carried across the water and inspired us in our prison cells far away,” he said. “As we celebrate, let us remind ourselves that our work is far from complete. Where there is poverty and sickness, including AIDS, where human beings are being oppressed, there is more work to be done.

“Our work is for freedom for all. … We say tonight, after nearly 90 years of life, it is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now, I thank you.”

Mr.Mugabe, SHAME ON YOU!

MugabeAccording to a report on CNN this afternoon, Mr. Mugabe (I refuse to refer to him as President Mugabe since he is NOT a legitimate President) has claimed to have won HIS single candidate presidential runoff election in Zimbabwe. Mr. Mugabe’s ZANU-PF intimidated the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Political Party into pulling out of the run-off election, leaving him as the sole candidate.  What a SHAM, what a JOKE, what PURE and self-centred dictatorship! what an EMBARESSMENT for Africa and the sovereign state of Zimbabwe. Mr. Mugabe has shown us just how bad leadership can go, rotting to the core, and denying an entire county its democratic right. Mr. Mugabe, SHAME ON YOU!!!

MySpace Redesign is fantastic!

I just had a look at the redesigned MySpace. All i can say is WOW! The new templates are fantastic and the site has a clean and translucent feel to it – very web 2.0! MySpace, quite honestly looked ugly before the redesign and I can see why they spent so much time working on it. They did a really great great job! Here is a screen shot of my new profile page (click to expand) using one of the new templates:

Tourism Travel in Kenya to be Taxed.

Wow! It just gets better and better! I am catching up on news from the last week or so and the latest shocker is that the budget also made tourism travel in Kenya taxable to 16% as per value added tax (VAT). Previously, this was not the case. However, at a time that Kenya’s tourism needs all the concessions it can get from the Government to recover from the post-election violence, they get additional taxes. For me, this is counter-intuitive and really suicidal for Kenya’s tourism industry. The tax affects all forms of travel including road and air in the country so…figures we can expect some resistance from tourists already wary of coming to Kenya. I guess we’re now really learning the true cost of what happened post-election, including a very large bill to run a bloated Government for the next four and a half years. Did I also mention that fuel is well on its way past Kes. 100.00 per liter and that food prices are spiraling out of control too? Sounds like a pretty potent and poisonous cocktail for the Kenyan tourism industry going forward. Anyway, lets be optimistic and hope some miracles happen since the budget also allocated around Kes. 1.5 billion to the Ministry of Tourism to help market Kenya aggressively globally in the coming year. I hope they use lots of this on internet marketing with the Kenya Tourist Board building a fabulous gung ho, no holding back, world-class web site!

Excise Duty Threatens Flashcom’s and Popote Wireless’ Survival

Flashcom LogoI am not much of an authority on Kenya’s telecoms sector but the recent announcement in this year’s budget that CDMA Wireless Operators in Kenya will now be subject to a 10% excise duty, much like the GSM Operators, will effctively kill the fledgling Flashcom and Popote Wireless businesses. Although Telkom Kenya operates a CDMA network as well, it has the benefit of a fixed line network that has NOT been affected by the excise duty. In addition, Telkom Kenya has the advantage of being majority owned by France Telecom which is well monied and has big plans for its Kenyan investment.

I am really concerned about this course of action since I admire bold entrepreneurial companies in Kenya and Africa in general that challenge the status quo by doing something new and exciting – creating a paradigm shift in the process. Flashcom and Popote Wireless are small companies in comparison to the telecoms giants that are Telkom Kenya, Safaricom and Celtel. In addition, the anticipated entry of the Orange GSM network by Telkom Kenya and Econet Wireless, what chance of survival do Flashcom and Popote Wireless have? In my humble opinion, are very slim.

I think the only way out for the two CDMA networks is to merge and look at the possibility of offering a value proposition that is very specifically unique from what the current (and expected) big boys of telecoms in Kenya have to offer. They could look at differentiating themselves by being very very customer service oriented since the likelihood of their client’s staying on is low when the prices rise to above that of the market rates for fixed line, GSM and CDMA competitor network operators. They could consider entering entirely new business areas such as application service provision, business process outsourcing, data storage, value added mobile services, etc. Its time to re-boot their DNA if they are to survive the coming telecoms storm in Kenya.

Firefox 3 Vulnerability Found

June 18, 2008

Five hours after Mozilla officially released Firefox 3.0, researchers found a vulnerability in the new browser. Tipping Point has verified the bug and reported it to Mozilla, Tipping Point said on Wednesday. Since Mozilla is still working on a fix, the researchers won’t share details about the problem. Tipping Point ranked the severity of the vulnerability as high, but said that users would have to click on a link in an e-mail or visit a malicious Web page before being affected. The issue affects users of Firefox 3.0 as well as Firefox 2.0.

Once the problem is fixed, Tipping Point will publish an advisory on its Web site, it said. Tipping Point found out about the vulnerability through its Zero Day Initiative, which lets researchers earn cash by submitting new vulnerabilities to the company. Once Tipping Point validates the issue, it pays the researcher for the information and notifies the relevant software vendor of the technical details. Mozilla did not respond to a request for comment.

Mozilla launched its newest browser on Tuesday along with a marketing stunt that went a bit wrong. The company announced that it wanted to set a Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period. However, the volume of downloads crippled Mozilla’s site, and so customers in the U.S. couldn’t begin downloading the software until two hours later than expected. Still, Mozilla said it logged more than 8 million downloads within 24 hours. There is currently no record for number of software downloads in a day, but Mozilla must now wait for review of the stunt by Guinness officials.

A wounded Tiger Woods comes back!

Tiger Woods celebrates Saturday after making an eagle putt on the 13th hole.Is there no stopping Tiger Woods? This guy had knee surgery in April 2008 and was in major pain when he clinched the lead from Lee Westwood at the U.S. Open this Saturday. Tiger is the definition of excellence! and a hero right up till the end. He’s not won the US Open yet but its inspiring what does time and again under pressure. For the full story, here it is on CNN.

The Kenya Movie Guide

I love going to the movies! At least once a week on the weekend, its just so much fun to catch the latest blockbusters on the big screen with great sound and warm popcorn to boot. So, how is it then that for the longest time the only place you can get up to date movie listings is in the daily newspapers? for me, for the longest time, and for lots of people, this has been a big frustration since you don’t always have the newspaper to know whats showing. That gave me an idea, a simple and useful one. I decided to build over this weekend a basic web page that would have a weekly listing of ALL the movies showing at ALL the Cinemas throughout Kenya. The result of this effort is The Kenya Movie Guide at http://www.movieguide.co.ke. I’ve tried to make the site as simple as possible so it should work on any standard PC /MAC web browser as well as your mobile phone web browser on a GPRS connection. Its not meant to be a complicated site so its just a basic listing and hyper links to each of the official movie web sites. The really useful thing about the Kenya Movie Guide is that for as long as you can get online, you will have the current and complete movie listing at your finger tips. I plan to improve it over time but for the time being its a start!

Robert Kubica – A legend in the making?

Robert Kubica winning the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix in Style! This past weekend, Robert Kubica, driving for BMW Sauber in the Canadian Grand Prix won the 2008 edition in true style! This, of course, became possible when Lewis Hamilton crashed into Kimi Raikonnen’s Ferrari when the red light in the Pit Lane came on at the exit (very silly how this happened if you ask me since these are race drivers and not pedestrians crossing a street!).

All in all, a race is won whether or not people make mistakes and at the end of the day, a winner is the one who seizes the moment and makes the most of it. At the same time, Robert has been super consistent throughout the 2008 season and has been threatening the Ferraris and McLarens at each and every race – Its almost inevitable what happened this past weekend. So, congratulations Robert for winning the race and leading the 2008 Formula 1 drivers standings for the first time ever! Next up is the French Grand Prix in a week’s time – Game on Robert, Lewis, Kimi and Massa!
